Maple League Hosts: Embracing the Spirit of Ubuntu On Thursday, February 11, beginning at 11:00 am Eastern, 12:00 noon Atlantic, join us for the February Maple League Hosts: Embracing the Spirit of Ubuntu: Implications for Transforming Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Join Dr. Joy Mighty to discuss how the African philosophy of Ubuntu helps us to understand and embrace our common humanity. At the same time, Ubuntu challenges us to reimagine our post-secondary institutions as vehicles for achieving equity, diversity and inclusion in a fractured world. In particular, we will discuss the implications of adopting Ubuntu as a means of transforming our curricula, teaching methodologies and learning environments so that all students, regardless of their social identity, may have an equal chance to learn and be academically successful. Thursday, February 4: THIS IS (a class about) SPARTA: Dr. Chelsea Gardner (Acadia) will take you on a tour of her virtual Maple League course on the topic of Sparta: Ancient History & Modern Identity. Students from Acadia and Mount Allison gather weekly in a seminar-style class that is entirely virtual, working together to discuss ancient texts, modern scholarship, and the way in which Sparta has been reappropriated in Europe and North America, particularly by fascist groups. Discussion will focus on a semester-long initiative in which students are tasked to collectively improve Wikipedia’s open-access resources available for the study of one of the most (in)famous cities of ancient Greece. Thursday, February 18: Hasta la Vista, Boredom: Synergizing speech with video and audio to maintain student engagement in online lectures, taught by Dr. Daniel Miller (Bishop’s). One of the main problems for instructors with the online format necessitated by the pandemic is the lack of our physical presence to engage class attention, resulting in a steady diminishment in student interest the longer a lecture goes on. This has led to a perceived need to shorten considerably the duration of any lecturing we do, and to search for alternative content delivery methods that can conceivably hold student attention longer in an online setting. But, there is a way to lecture online for as long as you do in the classroom and maintain your students’ engagement—synergize what you “say” with what you “play”. Thursday, February 25: Online Learning in Motion with EXS117: Active Lifestyle, Fitness & Health with Laura Crack (Bishop’s) In this session, Laura Crack (Bishop’s) will breakdown strategies for managing a large first year course in a synchronous online format, while prioritizing a high quality introduction to liberal education competencies including: Quantitative Reasoning, Critical Thinking and Information Literacy. In addition to preparing students for higher level courses in the field, EXS117 strategies are designed to integrate students’ personal health-related decisions into the course and harness the power of community and wearable technology to do so!
V_MLTLC Winter Book Club: The Privileged Poor
We are pleased to announce the Winter 2021 Maple League Book Club. Our selected text this semester is The Privileged Poor by Anthony Abraham Jack. This professional learning community will bring together faculty, staff, and students to discuss issues of race, class, access and belonging in higher education. We look forward to facilitating conversations with over 60 participants from across the Maple League and beyond. Limited seats are still available on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups meet every second week for five meetings, with the first meetings happening on February 8, 11, and 12 (times below*).
